TV aerial reception conditions in Banbury are generally quite bad. Not all of Banbury can receive digital TV even with a high gain aerial installation. Grimsbury and much of the south of the town works well on the Oxford transmitter but a lot of the town is in a dip and so does not have a line of sight to either of the main regional transmitters. These are in Oxford and in Sutton Coldfield (Birmingham). There is a TV local transmitter on Bretch Hill and many of the TV aerials in Banbury are directed to this transmitter. The disadvantage of using this transmitter is that it does not deliver channel 5 and also has no digital freeview signals.
The Bretch Hill transmitter broadcasts its signals vertically and so it’s easy to see if you and your neighbours are receiving from this transmitter as the aerials will be on their side rather than lying flat. The Bretch Hill transmitter causes another problem in that it broadcasts its analogue BBC2 on the same frequency as the Oxford digital signal for Sky News and Sky Sports News. So those people in Banbury with a digital freeview box can often not get these couple of channels. Most of the surrounding villages have better television aerial reception conditions than Banbury itself, with fewer complications. The most obvious exceptions are the Souldern and Somerton area where aerials often need to be fitted on tall masts to overcome signals being blocked by trees and higher ground.
